Attendance

Why Attendance is Important

Attendance is a key factor in a student’s academic success. Missing school, whether excused or unexcused, can disrupt learning and negatively impact a student’s future opportunities. Research shows that academic performance declines as absences increase, making it essential for students to be present and engaged in school every day.
Understanding Truancy vs. Chronic Absenteeism

While both terms relate to school attendance, they are not the same:

  • Truancy refers to unexcused absences without valid reasons and can have legal implications for families.
  • Chronic Absenteeism includes all absences, excused and unexcused, that total 10% or more of the school year (approximately 18 days for most schools). Chronic absenteeism is often a warning sign that a student is at risk academically.

The Impact of Missing School

When students are frequently absent, they miss critical instruction and the chance to build essential skills. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Falling behind in core subjects like math and reading.
  • Lower grades and test scores, which may affect future opportunities such as college admissions or career readiness.
  • Reduced engagement, making it harder to catch up and stay motivated.

Setting Students Up for Success

Our goal is to provide your child with the best possible opportunities for a bright future. Regular attendance ensures that they can fully benefit from their education, develop meaningful connections with peers and teachers, and build the foundation for lifelong success.

Let’s work together to make daily attendance a priority and give your child the tools they need to thrive!

Attendance Monitoring Process

We are committed to working with you to ensure that your child has every opportunity to succeed. If you have any concerns or need additional support, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s front office. Together, we can help your child make the most of their educational experience.

  • 5 Days/Periods Absent: After five days/periods of absence, a letter will be sent home, and an email via ParentVue with information about the importance of attendance.
  • 10 Days/Periods Absent: At ten days/periods of absence, a letter will be sent home, an email via ParentVue, a phone call will be made and/or a conference will be set-up to discuss the situation.
  • 15 Days/Periods Absent: After 15 days/periods of absence, a letter will be sent home, an email via ParentVue, and a conference will be set-up to address the continuing issue and reiterate the importance of regular attendance.
  • 18 Days/Periods Absent: If your child accumulates 18 days/periods of absence, we may refer the case to the Yavapai County Juvenile Probation office for further action.
